Sparrowhawk - Sunflowers in the Moonlight

On its second full-length album, Minneapolis-based foursome Sparrowhawk continues on its mission to make super-awesome rock music. I'm not one to judge an album by its cover, but it would be hard to look at Lucas Gluesenkamp's bad-ass cover art for Sunflowers in the Moonlight at not assume that the music would totally kick ass. Luckily, there's no assumption necessary in the era of streaming. But even in digital times, some albums ought to be experienced on vinyl based on how they look and sound. This is one of them!

Sparrowhawk is by no means the only indie/punk band embracing '70s arena rock, but you won't find anyone else doing it better. Following their excellent 2023 debut, Johnny Eggerman, Zach McCormick, Damien Tank, and Marty Mueller have doubled down on their love for classic rock. I was amused that the promotional email I received in the advance of the album release was sent by "Phil Lynott." If Philo was going to come back from the dead to do some publicity work, it was certainly going to be for a record like this one. This is an arena-sized rock 'n' roll long player with a punk rock heart. On this release, the band has added a touch of Allman Brothers/Molly Hatchet influence and expanded its repertoire to include ballads and rustic folk rock. Your dad or granddad would love this record, and that's not a knock. Sparrowhawk truly throws it back to a time when there was no shame in crafting a rock radio hit.

Sunflowers in the Moonlight builds on the sound and style of its predecessor. It's everything that was great about the last album and much more. The melodic rockers "Underneath the Moonlight," "Still Talk About It Now," and "Power and the Glory" will please anyone who loved the band's debut. "Blackberry Brandy" is full-on Southern rock and totally freaking excellent. "Lonesome Operator" is a splendid power ballad in the proper sense of the term. "Down the Line" is giving Stones/Faces energy, and I'm sure not complaining. The title track is earnest Americana with all kinds of scrappy charm. And what other band would think to close an album with a Western-themed eleven-minute multipart finale? That's pure genius!

Of course Sunflowers in the Moonlight rocks hard. Those harmonized lead guitars remain front and center, and these tunes will have you air-drumming like a maniac in short order. But the Midwestern soul in this music should not be sold short. The album's lyrics are heavy on storytelling and character sketches, so this is like listening to a record with the substance of a movie or short story collection. The band reunited with Andy Mathison, whose recording and mixing favors a sound that's massive but never too slick. Imagine what a king you would be if you were walking around with the Sparrowhawk logo emblazoned on the back of your denim jacket. People would see you and immediately want to hear the band that had the vision to pick such an unfuckwithable name. And one guy would be like, "I heard those guys! They did that song 'Take a Bow'!" And you'd be like, "Dude! Wait until you hear this new album!"

How do you top a big, hooky rock record? You make an even bigger, hookier rock record! The vinyl, limited to 200 copies, was pressed in Minneapolis by Outta Wax and released on the Twin Cities' own PiƱata Records. In the process of bringing this album into existence, the band really showed some love to its own community. And that tells you a lot about Sparrowhawk. Grab a copy of this monster while you can!

The New Brutarians - "Tonight's Your Night (Tonight)"

The New Brutarians are back with another stone cold banger of a single! Last year's summer of singles was just the beginning! Adam T. and Robbie Rist are in full glam fury on this glitzy rocker that practically explodes out of your speakers. I'm talking scorching guitars, smashing drums, a whiff of whiskey and hairspray, and enough attitude in the vocals to raise Stiv Bators from the dead. If you dig Hanoi Rocks, the New York Dolls, early KISS, and Adam's old band The Beatings, then The New Brutarians are speaking your language! Vinyl release coming from Sioux Records later this year!

The Prize - "From the Night"

How long have I been talking about how amazing a full-length from The Prize would be? Well, we're finally getting it! In the Red, the Melbourne-based group's highly anticipated debut album, will be out September 19th on Goner Records in the U.S.A. and Anti Fade Records in Australia. Drummer Nadine Muller and guitarist Carey Paterson remain co lead vocalists, and they're joined by guitarists Joseph Imfeld and Austin Haire along with new bass player Ethan Stahl (Chubby and the Gang, Loose Lips). In advance of the album, a new single called "From the Night" has been released. And what a tune it is! "From the Night" is the sort of straight-forward guitar-heavy rock song you rarely hear these days. It hearkens back to the '70s and '80s while still sounding perfectly in place with the red-hot Aussie garage/punk scene of the present day. If you're gonna have three guitarists in your band, you might as well use them! Pre-orders for In the Red are open now. Move quickly if you want the colored vinyl — or any vinyl at all!

Patrol - self titled EP

I must admit I was a little skeptical about the idea of Barcelona's Patrol. How is it humanly possible to combine riff-driven heavy rock with scuzzy modern-day budget punk and have it all come together in a way that works? Well I may be a skeptic, but I'm also open-minded enough to listen. And once I lent Patrol's self-titled debut EP my ears, I was all-in. If you're going to marry heavy metal to punk rock, this is how you do it: with blazing riffs & leads, a blistering pace, and a surprisingly melodic approach to songwriting. Out now on 7" on Drunken Sailor Records, this EP belongs to that category of music that should only be enjoyed at ear-bursting volumes. Sometimes you have these bands that are too rock for the punk crowd and too punk for the rock crowd. But that's not the case with Patrol. Anyone who likes loud, aggressive rock 'n' roll with hooks ought to dig this noise in a big way. Red vinyl is sold out. Get the black while you can!

The Family Township - 20th Century Wasters

Earlier this year, I reviewed an absolute smash of a single from The Family Township called "Cross the Line (Oh Andrea)." That song and ten others make up The Family Township's new album 20th Century Wasters. This long-running Boston-based band is made up of Marc W. Pinansky on vocals and guitar, John Sheeran on bass, Peter MacLean on drums, Alejandro Necochea on guitars and backing vocals, and James Rohr on keyboards and backing vocals. I would characterize The Family Township as a real rock band — something most people assume no longer exists. On its 7th full-length album, The Family Township is here to show you that big hook arena-style rock very much still exists and is, in fact, going strong. I usually refrain from quoting directly from a press release because it seems like lazy reviewing, but I can't help repeating the band's description of these songs: "Bristling with the fury and frustrations of the modern age, longing and love, layers of melody ebb and flow as each song reveals more of itself upon repeated listens." I literally could not have said it better than myself. You can tell that this band lives in the world of classic rock but isn't just trying to make something that sounds like the best rock album of 1978. If you could play and sing like these guys (Pinansky can freaking belt it!), you'd want to rock out too! Sometimes these guys go for an "FM radio hit of yore" vibe ("Youngblood," "Straight to Your Heart"). Other times they rock hard and over the top ("(It's a) Heartbreak," "Out of Control"). In all cases, they play with tremendous passion and without a trace of irony. The Family Township is a tight and powerful band with a boatload of killer tunes. If old school AOR radio still gets your blood pumping, give 20th Century Wasters 40 minutes of your time.

Golden Richards - "Take a Chance"

You know spring is finally coming when Golden Richards drops a new single. Keeping with their annual tradition of releasing new music in March or April, Gil Golden, Billy Richards, and friends throw it back to the heyday of Van Halen and KISS on the big hooky rock anthem "Take a Chance." Living in that space where hard rock intersects with power pop, "Take a Chance" captures the vibe of summertime adolescent fun circa the late '70s or early '80s. This is the type of song I've been wanting Golden Richards to do for a while, and it totally suits the band's talents. Call it hard power pop or poppy hard rock if you want. But more than anything else, this is just rock n' roll. Billy really gets to show off his pipes, and there are guitar solos all over the place. The song depicts the sort of fun that I always imagined the older kids having when I was a child: driving around in a Pontiac Firebird in search of pretty girls and cheap beer while Van Halen plays in the tape deck. There's even a dance party at the local water tower! As you would expect from a Golden Richards song, there are huge hooks to go with all of that rock. This song romanticizes summer love even as it reminds us how short-lived it inevitably is. How many of our best memories would not exist if we hadn't, uh, taken a chance? If you've liked the direction Golden Richards has taken on recent singles "Shake Your Hair" and "Will I Be Cool," you're gonna love "Take a Chance"! It's ironic to be typing this in thirty-some degree weather with the wind howling, but warm weather is right around the corner. "Take a Chance" will sound great as you cruise the streets with the windows down — even if you don't drive a Firebird.

Self-Cut Bangs - Circle Around The Free

One of the most pleasant surprises of the unpleasantly surprising year of 2020 was the debut of Calgary duo Self-Cut Bangs. No doubt, "Self-Cut Bangs" is the greatest-ever name for a pandemic inspired band. But the music has proven to be even better than the name. To recap: Self-Cut Bangs began as one couple's home recording project during COVID lockdown. That spring/summer, Cayley O'Neill (Dark Time) and Shawn Petsche (Napalmpom) wrote and recorded one new song every Saturday. They kept up this ritual long enough to make an album, which was released in September 2020 to great acclaim (including mine). The album was such a success that Self-Cut Bangs became a permanent entity (and now a full-fledged live-ready band!). A couple years later, we now get Circle Around The Free, the sophomore release from Self-Cut Bangs. And oddly enough, I'd call this the band's "COVID" album. That first album was conceived as an escapist project. It was the feelgood indie power pop album we all needed at the time. Circle Around The Free, on the other hand, is inspired by the couple's actual voice memos from 2020. Across these 12 tracks, Cayley and Shawn dig deep into their own reflections on a time of sudden change and unprecedented strangeness. And as the world slowly returns to as close to "normal" as we'll likely ever get, these songs prove to be relatable and comforting.

I'll say first off that Circle Around The Free is a little more expansive in approach compared to its predecessor. The vibe that Cayley and Shawn went for this time is "retro futuristic," and that's something I can totally get into. This album seems far more in line with modern-day indie rock, yet it's also decidedly more '80s new wave sounding than the last one. I don't know how that's even possible, but these two totally pulled it off. And if you listened to the first album and were surprised that it was co-crafted by the guitarist from Napalmpom, you will definitely hear a few tracks this time out where the classic rock comes out to play. Circle Around The Free does what few albums manage to do: bring together the best parts of new wave/post-punk, classic alternative rock, and contemporary indie rock in a completely satisfying way. This is a record that sounds cool and current without sacrificing big hooks and a rockin' edge. It looks to the future while offering numerous nods to the past. Tracks like "Shivers" and "In Colour" are so redolent of peak '90s indie rock that they practically make me feel twentysomething again. "Stargazer" and "Wake" give the synth-pop of yore a modern makeover. If there's already such a thing as a "vintage" Self-Cut Bangs song, "Never Say Never" is it. Elsewhere, Circle Around The Free stretches the band's sound in cool ways. There are pure indie rock tunes ("Make Believe"), high-energy rockers ("Abraham"), and even successful forays into post-punk ("Gibberish"). If I described a song as being half Black Sabbath and half indie pop, you'd never in a million years expect that to work. But somehow, someway, closing track "Head Start" is an absolute triumph.

Like Self-Cut Bangs' debut, Circle Around The Free was home recorded and then turned over to Lorrie Matheson, who works his usual mixing and mastering magic. What results is a very warm-sounding modern rock record that seems tailor-made for long walks in the cold spent pondering the events of recent years (we are getting to the time of the year for such a thing!). Since the album's completion, the addition of drummer Joel Nye (Hot Little Rocket), guitarist Dillon Whitfield (Astral Swans, Reuben & The Dark), and bassist Nicola Cavanagh (Cardiograms, Night Committee) has expanded Self-Cut Bangs from a one couple home-recording project to a full band featuring two couples! One can only hope that any potential Fleetwood Mac/ABBA level of fame to come is not accompanied by the epic drama that plagued those bands. Another cool thing this band is working on is making music videos for all the songs on Circle Around The Free. I've embedded a couple of the clips below, but there are several more worth checking out on the band's YouTube page. Circle Around The Free, like its predecessor, is a free download from Bandcamp. Music this good for the price of free is a rare treat. Jump on it!

The Amplifier Heads - SaturnalienS

SaturnalienS
, the third full-length album by Boston's The Amplifier Heads, has been rightfully described as a "graphic novel for the ears and head". It's a throwback to a time when you'd put on your headphones and just sit there getting lost in a rock and roll record. Does anyone still do that? SaturnalienS was written and produced by singer/guitarist Sal Baglio, who has been writing rocking, hook-laden tunes for 40 years plus with bands such as The Stompers and the recent supergroup The Peppermint Kicks. With Baglio, you always know you're getting a highlight reel of the coolest sounds in the history of rock and roll. Running the gamut from roots rock and roll to the British Invasion to garage rock to glam to '70s arena rock, SaturnalienS launches these classic sounds into a fantastical outer space odyssey full of ghost stars, rocket boys, earth girls, young dolls, and beheaded amps. SaturnalienS plays like the hottest-selling album in the solar system -- garnering rave reviews and heavily rotated airplay on every rocket ship, space station, and extraterrestrial watering hole from the moon to Uranus. Those of you who couldn't get enough of Baglio's contributions to The Peppermint Kicks' debut album will be delighted to find that SaturnalienS is in a very similar vein. Needless to say, glam rock is at the center of this sonic adventure. "GlamoRama" is that rare tribute song that can stand toe-to-toe with the iconic music it celebrates. "Bat Shit Crazy" will have humans and aliens alike clapping and stomping with whatever appendages they may possess. "On the Moon" evokes the spirit of David Bowie in epic fashion. But in typical Amplifier Heads style, this album dishes out a tremendous variety of amazing rock and roll tunes. "Ghost Star Rider" is a surf rock instrumental gone to space, while "Earth Girls on the Loose" is the ultimate in wild, high energy rock and roll. "Peppermint Kicks" will scratch your itch for classic riff-driven hard rock. "The House of Young Dolls" is upbeat, jangly pop straight out of 1964.

As cool as its concept may be, SaturnalienS succeeds on the strength of its tunes. Baglio's affection for the heyday of rock and roll is not mere nostalgia. He and his bandmates appreciate the timeless art of two-to-three minute rock and roll songs with roaring guitars, memorable melodies, and choruses made for the radio. In a modern world full of bands filling ultra-specific niches, The Amplifier Heads still aim to be a great rock and roll band, period. On this planet and beyond, such a thing will never go out of style. SaturnalienS is out now on your home of the hits --- the mighty Rum Bar Records!

The Peppermint Kicks - self titled

So you like the pop side of rock and roll, but you still need it to really rock? Well then The Peppermint Kicks are the band for you! Co-fronted by Dan Kopko (Watts, The Shang Hi Los) and Sal Baglio (The Stompers, The Amplifier Heads), The Peppermint Kicks are a throwback to the days of CREEM magazine, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, $7 arena shows, and band posters all over your bedroom wall. The band's self-titled debut album releases today on the mighty Rum Bar Records. This ten-song long player would not have sounded out of place on your teenage turntable alongside T. Rex, Cheap Trick, the Ramones, and The Who. Equal parts glam rock, power pop, first wave punk, and big hooky classic rock, The Peppermint Kicks sound has been likened to "a cool drink of strawberry lemonade, with a sprig of mint and a gut-punch chaser". Yum! Kopko and Baglio are both longtime fixtures of the Boston rock and roll scene. Combining the musical visions of both of these artists (much of it shared), you get a killer rock and roll band steeped in the timeless traditions of pop songwriting. What could be better?

I love that The Peppermint Kicks have come out big! The band kicks off its debut album (and entire discography) with a full-on rock anthem in "When Rock & Roll Met Your Dad". An epic love letter to rock and roll, this is the perfect introduction to The Peppermint Kicks and what they're all about. It's immediately followed by "Hey Fanzine!", which takes us back to the glory days of the rocking power pop radio hit. Building off such an auspicious start, the album proceeds to take you on a whirlwind tour of the coolest sounds of rock and roll's heyday. "Strawberry Girls" is a snappy, melodic tune that sounds like it could have sprung from the later '60s U.K. "I Don't Hear A Single" is a timeless pop song that ironically sounds...like a single! "Johnny D's (Play It Again)" is a vintage Danny The K fists-in-the-air sing-along rocker. "Shag '72" is an old style rock and roll toe-tapper with hooks for days. "Stooge" channels peak-era Rolling Stones. To my absolute delight, "Rock & Roll Rampage" embraces nearly every arena rock clichĆ© in the book.

It is 100% safe to say that any fan of Watts or The Amplifier Heads will love The Peppermint Kicks. You get the best of both bands here. Kopko and Baglio both sing, play guitar, and contribute some piano and percussion. Lead songwriting duties are split 50/50. Legend has it that the ghost of Little Richard commanded these two individuals to join forces. I, for one, do not doubt that narrative. This band and this album are a celebration of a moment in time when rock was king. Every song is a hit -- unless it's an anthem. And while no one is getting rich these days writing rock and roll songs with great hooks, you know you've made it when the likes of Palmyra Delran and Genya Ravan are singing your praises. Whether you were a teenager in the '70s or simply wish you could have been, this pop-rock cocktail ought to hit the spot!

Watts - Shady Rock & Rollers

It's hard to believe that it's been five years since Watts released The Black Heart Of Rock-N-Roll -- the greatest '70s rock record of the 21st Century. A string of fantastic singles ("All Done With Rock n Roll", "Queens", "Breaking Glass") followed in the ensuing years -- suggesting that Watts had yet another epic rock album in the works. Today the Boston foursome finally unleashes its long-awaited follow-up to The Black Heart Of Rock-N-Roll. Out on Rum Bar Records, Shady Rock & Rollers is both a vintage Watts record and a logical next step in the band's progression.

While Shady Rock & Rollers finds Watts still carrying on in the grand tradition of Aerosmith, KISS, and AC/DC, it broadens the band's musical vision with a more refined sound and major nods to its glam rock foundations. Building off the '70s hard rock purism of The Black Heart Of Rock-N-Roll, Shady Rock & Rollers brings to mind a time when there was no shame in aspiring to write massive radio hits that would dominate the airwaves and fill arenas. The band still delivers on all the essential fundamentals: big riffs, big hooks, ripping solos, and stellar work from one of one of modern-day rock's finest rhythm sections. If you want fist-pumping rock anthems, the bookend tracks "Loud & Fast" and the aforementioned "All Done With Rock n Roll" are sure to satisfy. "Queens" is like the best KISS song in 40 years. "The Night The Lights Went Down", featuring drummer John Lynch on lead vocals, is a punchy barroom rocker right in that Mott the Hoople/'70s Stones/early Aerosmith wheelhouse. But a particular strength of this album is the way the band complements its loud & fast side by also mastering the art of hard & slow. There are a number of tracks here that find Watts leaning hard into pop territory (yet still rocking hard!). "Shady" seems inhabited by the spirit of Marc Bolan, while "Heavy Metal Kids" and "Shocking Pink" are firmly rooted in the Cheap Trick wing of power pop. "When the Party Ends" is that rare power ballad that's actually powerful.

It is to all of our benefit that Shady Rock & Rollers' concluding track "All Done With Rock n Roll" is not a retirement letter but rather a lamentation on how real rock and roll has fallen out of the mainstream. Watts is most definitely not done with rock and roll and has just delivered another fantastic album redolent of a time when the likes of Cheap Trick, KISS, and the almighty Stones reigned supreme. Uninterested in fame and fortune, Watts makes rock and roll for rock and roll's sake. Having missed the heyday of arena rock (I was only six years old in 1977), I can still experience a similar magic every time I put on a Watts record. It doesn't get much sweeter than popping Shady Rock & Rollers into my car CD player on a sunny day and cranking it loud! Now let's see if we can talk Malibu Lou into simultaneously releasing four solo albums from each member of Watts. Maybe next year?

Death By Unga Bunga - Heavy Male Insecurity

As we've moved into the third month of 2021, I've fallen a little behind on some of the really good full-length albums that have been released so far this year. I'll start playing catch-up with the fifth LP by Norwegian rockers Death By Unga Bunga. Heavy Male Insecurity does include the four songs the band released as singles last year. So you already have an idea of what to expect: big catchy arena rock with power pop hooks and garage/punk roots. If you liked the band's last couple of albums, you'll love this one!

While not fully a concept album, Heavy Male Insecurity does explore at length the very hot topic of modern-day masculinity. The lead track "Modern Man" is a true anthem for our times. It employs touches of humor to make a very serious statement about what it ought to mean to be a man in today's world. The hooks on this track are massive! While you're pumping your fist and shouting along, you're joining Death By Unga Bunga in defining a more contemporary, less toxic brand of masculinity. The band's modern man is in touch with his emotions, caring and considerate, and willing to fight against injustice and prejudice. He also enjoys baking and makes an effort to eat less meat. I might have to work on that last part, but I can dig what the band is saying here. "Egocentric" revisits the same theme by exploring the antithesis of the modern man: the overgrown child who fully lacks empathy. Elsewhere "All Pain, No Gain" hits very close to home as it pokes fun at dudes like me who are in the gym every day obsessing over their "gains". Maybe I should feel personally attacked, but I find this song quite funny and very much on-point. And what a banger this track is -- taking the "action rock" genre straight over the top and even going full-on Iron Maiden in the guitar solo!

Heavy Male Insecurity complements Death By Unga Bunga's outstanding 2020 singles ("Egocentric", "Not Like The Others", "Live Until I Die, Trouble") with some of the band's strongest material to date. This album delivers a great mix of radio-ready power pop hits ("Like Your Style"), epic arena numbers ("White Lies"), and big hooky rockers ("My Buddy and Me"). This whole "'70s hard rock meets power pop with a punk influence" genre is hardly a new thing, but Death By Unga Bunga pulls it off better than almost anyone else. This is a band that knows how to write quality tunes with legit hooks. These guys come off like they'd be super fun to hang out with, and their music manages to reflect that. I don't see how anyone could watch the music video "Egocentric" and not totally love these guys! If you're looking for a contemporary and enlightened take on the arena rock of yore, you cannot go wrong with Heavy Male Insecurity!

The Short Fuses - Dawn of the Deaf

Can I get a Hell yeah!? One of the most monstrous rock and roll records of recent years finally gets a physical release! The Short Fuses unleashed their raging comeback album Dawn of the Deaf in April of last year. It was their first new album in nearly 16 years. And holy smokes, did this thing ever rip! Travis Ramin, Miss Georgia Peach, and Justin Staggs re-assembled as a trio and flat-out rocked it. Inspired by 2016 election rage and a fascination with horror that was a rite of passage for almost any 1980s East Coast punk kid, the band was revved-up to make the resistance rock record of 2019. And now it becomes the resistance rock record of 2020! Dawn of the Deaf is out today on the mighty Rum Bar Records. This just might be the hardest-rocking thing Lou has ever released. Not playing it loud ought to be against the law. In my quarter-century of reviewing records, I don't know if I've ever heard a more successful merging of hard rock and punk influences. And then you've got Georgia's powerful, soulful vocals taking it over the top (is there a more underappreciated singer in all of rock?). If you were raised on a steady diet of the MC5, Motƶrhead, the Dead Boys, and The Misfits, these 12 thundering tracks ought to be right up your alley. From the powerhouse opener "Baby Got Bat Wings" to the face-melting "Rock Yo Self (Until You Wreck Yo Self") to the resistance anthems "Furiosa" and "No" to the arena death rock of the title track to the epic instrumental "High Score", Dawn of the Deaf is an unrelenting force! Heck, there's even a cover of Jakkpot's "You Ain't Shit (Without a Leather Jacket)" that gives the original a serious run for its money!

In order to ensure that Dawn of the Deaf was as awesome of a rock and roll record as humanly possible, The Short Fuses enlisted a production team of legendary proportions. Daniel Rey produced the album. Adrian Popovich from Tricky Woo mixed it. Geza X mastered it. With all of that talent involved in the creation of this album, you had to know it was going to sound amazing and massive. More than a mere satisfying comeback, Dawn of the Deaf is The Short Fuses' best album by far. You can feel the passion, conviction, and energy that went into this record. And rather than overshadowing the message, these killer tunes make it all the more powerful. These songs were written and recorded well before the events of 2020, but their re-release at this exact moment in time could not be more fitting. If you're outraged by injustice in the world, this album ought to be your personal soundtrack to fighting the power. Crank up the volume, rock out righteously, and don't let the bastards grind you down!

Toadskin - self titled tape

Toadskin's new cassette tape reminds me of old school indie rock/punk. This Milwaukee-based trio is made up of Jeff VanDreel (ex Beach Patrol) on guitar and vocals, Trevor Broskowski (bass/vocals), and Logan Byrne (drums). I'm getting an SST Records or old Sub Pop vibe from this six-song tape, which combines elements of stoner rock/metal, punk rock, psychedelic rock, and noisy indie rock. In another lifetime, we may have called this "grunge"! In a totally good way, this is some weird shit. I think it's neat that the songs range from less than one minute long to nearly seven. I'm seeing song titles like "Ice Age Trail", "Sediment", "Edge of the Lake" and thinking, "Earth science has never been so cool!". These are some heavy tunes from the woods of Wisconsin. I dig!

Indonesian Junk - A Life of Crimes (singles and rarities 2009-2018)

Well here's the compilation you were dying for! Indonesian Junk has been one of planet Earth's top punk rock rock and roll bands for several years now, releasing a trio of fantastic albums in Indonesian Junk (2015), Stars In The Night (2017), and Spiderbites (2019) on the always fabulous Rum Bar Records. The precursor to Indonesian Junk was the Daniel James Gang, who released two singles back in 2009-2010. In case you desired a one-stop shop for all of Indonesian Junk's non-album recordings as well as the super rare Daniel James Gang tracks, Rum Bar Records proudly presents the decade-spanning collection A Life of Crimes. This essentially functions as a fourth Indonesian Junk album. Like the other three, it's a killer mashup of street tough '70s punk, glam-inspired hard rock, and big hooky power pop with an additional touch of darkness and gloom. No other band gives you all of that at once!

The material on Life of Crimes spans the years 2009-2018. It features the entirety of the Daniel James Gang singles "Nothin' I Can Do and "In This City", Indonesian Junk's 2015 7" "Crimes", the KISS cover "C'mon and Love Me" from 2018's Darkness Calling EP, and four previously unreleased tracks. As is often the case with these kinds of collections, the cover songs are feature attractions. If your introduction to Indonesian Junk turns out to be a KISS cover, well that's kind of awesome! Daniel and company cut a great version of The Joneses' classic "Pill Box" back in 2017 which somehow was never released. Well now you finally get to hear it! There are also covers of "Situations" by Slaughter and the Dogs and "Outfit" by Starz. The fact that one band would cover KISS, The Joneses, Slaughter and the Dogs, and Starz tells you a lot about Daniel's musical vision! But don't sleep on the originals. "Crimes" is one of Indonesian Junk's signature songs. "Now That It's Over" blurs the lines between heartbreak and a complete mental breakdown. "Nothin' I Can Do" and "I'm So Bored" hold up as well as anything from the 2010 punk/power pop/rock and roll universe. If you're already a fan of this Milwaukee trio, A Life of Crimes is an essential purchase to complete your collection. And if you've yet to be inducted into the Junk Army, your next move should be to head on over to Bandcamp and explore the band's full criminal history!

The Hi-End - Class Kicks

You could write a thousand words about The Hi-End, but "high octane rock & roll" pretty much tells you everything you need to know. This Boston five-piece releases its new album Class Kicks today on Rum Bar Records. Proceed to checkout!

Typical of a Boston rock and roll band, The Hi-End features a formidable cast of veteran players. Johnny Carlevale (Johnny Carlevale and His Band of All Stars, Johnny Carlevale & The Rollin' Pins) is on lead vocals. Curt Florczak from B-Movie Rats is on guitar. You may also recognize Anthony Giordano (bass), Bruno Giordano (guitar), and Scott Sugarman (drums) from The Boston Swindlers. Together these five contribute an array of influences covering the last 65 years of rock and roll (or maybe just the first 30!). The Hi-End brings to mind a time in music when you could be a bar band at heart but still fill arenas. I'm hearing a whole lot of AC/DC, Aerosmith, and '70s Stones in these 12 tracks, along with more than a pinch of pub rock and glam-punk. Class Kicks is the sort of thing you don't hear very often these days: a pure hard rocking record stacked with mighty riffs and killer songs. You've got that perfect blend of thundering rhythm guitar and red-hot lead work, a rhythm section that knows how to drive a beat, and a lead singer with legit rock star pipes and a swagger to match. Lead track "Looking For Some Kicks" roars like the Dead Boys going full-bore rock. "Perfect Company" channels the Stones via the New York Dolls and brings an energy that is positively electric. "The Way She Moves Me" highlights the band's hookier inclinations, while "Feed My Need" throws it back to the heyday of classic metal. "One Day At A Time" is pub rock by the book, and that's a book that never gets old. Did somebody mention high octane rock and roll? "It's A Long Way Down" and "Blood Red Lips" could just about raise Bon Scott and Malcolm Young from the dead.

It seems fitting that The Hi-End are now label mates with Watts. Malibu Lou just might single-handedly revive the glory days of rock, and he could probably do it with just Boston bands! When it comes to high energy rock and roll, The Hi-End is top shelf. This band has got it all: the style, the chops, and great tunes for days. Make sure your arm is loosened up for frequent raising of the volume knob and lots of spontaneous air guitar heroics. Class Kicks kicks ass!

Watts - Seventeen

Alright! Watts, one of America's finest rock and roll bands, has released maybe its strongest single yet. And it's free! Written by singer/guitarist Dan Kopko, "Seventeen" is Side A of a brand-new digital single available from Rum Bar Records. It's a ripping dive bar rocker that ought to have you dancing in your PJs within seconds. It delivers just about everything you could want from a rock and roll song: a toe-tapping beat, hard bluesy riffs, a killer vocal from Dan, sizzling lead work, a sing-along chorus, and for good measure a whole lot of horns! Watts is definitely treading early '70s Stones territory here - familiar ground for the Boston foursome. And let me tell you: the band rocks out this track like there's no tomorrow! As you can always expect from a Danny the K production, the guitars and drums are absolutely thunderous. Alex Kopko's horns add a cool layer to the band's usual attack. I know horns in rock and roll can be hit or miss, but here they definitely hit. This song is such a scorcher that it just about leaves me breathless! On the B-side, "When The Party Ends" switches things up with a mellow, reflective vibe that again brings peak-era Stones to mind. Dan and guitarist John Blout wrote this one together. It's a true power ballad - showing the thoughtful side of Watts while still packing one hell of a punch.

Although "Seventeen" is a digital single, I appreciate that it was designed like it was a vinyl record. Watts has given us a pair of songs that are meant to complement each other. You've got one song for the height of the party and another for the contemplative morning after. This record is a perfect example of why I love Watts. Of course these guys can play circles around just about anybody, but it's their ability to write amazing tunes that really sets them apart. Crank up your digital turntable and enjoy a classic rock and roll single like hardly anybody makes anymore. All you need is a Watts poster for your wall!

Johnny Jetson - Make Your Move

Johnny Jetson is a glam rock lifer whose musical career has spanned several decades and taken him from New York City to L.A. to Minneapolis. He was in Space Age Playboys back in the '90s, Tattooed Millionaires in the 2000s, and now plays in the Speed City Vipers. He's released a terrific new solo record called Make Your Move - which is available now in digital form from Minnie-Apple Records. What I love about this record is that it captures the essence of Johnny Jetson. It's an over-the-top and fully unapologetic glam rock and roll record - rooted in a great love for everyone from the New York Dolls to T. Rex to Alice Cooper to KISS to Cheap Trick to the bad boys of the Sunset Strip. As '90s/2000s mainstream rock moved away from the hooky tunes and dumb fun of the rock and roll of yore, Johnny Jetson remained a true believer in the old ways. And he's still at it today! The man's on a mission, and it's no accident that the phrases "rock" and "rock and roll" are invoked on several of these song titles. Johnny Jetson is still keeping the faith for real rock and roll like you used to hear on the radio in the '70s and '80s. "Love Me For My Car" rides a timeless Marc Bolan groove straight into that head space where only the catchiest tunes latch onto you. "Hang Around With You" has the bluster of sleaze rock and the heart of pure pop. I heard the opening riffs to "Miss Devious" and half-expected Joan Jett to start singing. "I Believe In Rock And Roll" is a full-on mission statement. If it comes off corny, I would say that's an entirely good thing. Sometimes rock and roll is the only thing we have to believe in, and it never lets us down.

Johnny Jetson is no way inclined to "adapt" for modern times. He's gonna play his kind of music until the day he dies, and he's gonna do it with style and unceasing enthusiasm. From the quintessential hard rock trash of "Knocked Out" to the bubblegum glam of the title track, Make Your Move is all about big guitars, big hooks, and lyrics that unflinchingly embrace the silly cliches and tongue-in-cheek sleaziness that once made rock so great. It seems to me that a song called "Mouth Made For Rock N Roll" is precisely what the world needs at the moment. But while the attitude is commendable, Jetson's talent for writing catchy, hard-rocking tunes of considerable quality should not be overlooked. This album makes me wanna grow out my hair, stay up past my bedtime, and play my records so loud that the neighbors want to fight me. What am I waiting for?!

Duck & Cover - Two Shots

Duck & Cover has returned with its first new music in a couple of years - and of course these songs are gonna rock your face off! The three-song 7" "Two Shots" is a great follow-up to 2018's album Rob Them Blind, and as always this foursome operates at the intersection of early '80s hard rock/AOR and nail-tough Boston punk. The title track is the kind of over-the-top heavy rock anthem that that they just don't play on the radio anymore (although you wish they did!). It alternates between a deliberate mid-tempo verse and a truly thunderous chorus, with guitars raging as Chris delivers an intense and absolutely bad-ass vocal. The song definitely recalls the loud and proud FM rock of yore, yet it's got a nasty edge to it that has become a signature for Duck & Cover. If you're looking for a song that will have you air drumming and air guitaring to your heart's content, "Two Shots" is IT! "Bleeding Edge" comes on with a similar power but takes a more melodic, hook-driven direction. The lead guitar and bass sound amazing, and all in all this is a great reminder of a time when big, hooky hard rock was king. To finish, "Unlucky 17" is another balls-out rocker with quality hooks and a ton of attitude. For some reason, I'm reminded a little of Alice Cooper here. And if there's anything we need more of in today's music, it would be bands I can mention in the same sentence as Alice Cooper!

Duck & Cover sure isn't fooling around on "Two Shots". This EP is an all-killer, no-filler affair that satisfies on every level. The songs slay, the production is top-notch, and all the guys tear it up with their musical chops. This is what it sounds like to hear a band rocking out without apology, and yet the punk influence is still evident in the grittiness and general economy of the band's attack. I've had the pleasure to feature Duck & Cover a number of times over the years. Pound for pound, "Two Shots" might be the band's strongest release yet!

Justine and the Unclean - "Picking A Fight"

I've been a big fan of Boston foursome Justine and the Unclean going back to the summer of 2017, and today it's my pleasure to feature a teaser single for a new album due out this May. Those of you wishing for more tales of relationships in conflict and men behaving badly are in for a real treat! What I enjoy about this particular single is that shows both sides of the band. "Picking A Fight" is a perfect shot of the band's signature rocking poppy punk. "Sweet Denial", on the other hand, flexes those AOR/hard rock muscles that really came into bloom on the last EP Heartaches and Hot Problems. "Picking A Fight" is a fine example of how to do punk-pop that genuinely kicks ass. The guitars punch, the drums slam, and the tempo is pushed to the brink. Justine not only has a one of a kind voice, but she also can write a catchy hook like nobody's business. What a tune! "Sweet Denial" slows the pace and goes for a heavier sound. Dave Minehan gives this track a massive production, which fits the song perfectly. I love the contrast between the thundering riffs and that melodic, bittersweet chorus. And man, that guitar solo will just about shake your walls! The forthcoming album is titled Every Bone that Breaks, and you can bet it's gonna be something special. Stay tuned to the Rum Bar Records Facebook page for updates on this and many more new releases coming out on the label. Seriously: Lou's putting out music way faster than I can keep up with all of it!

Bullet Proof Lovers - self titled

On what is now their fourth release, Spain's Bullet Proof Lovers go the self-titled route for the second time! Kurt, Luiyi, Joseba, Gonzalo, and Juan are back, and of course they're looking to rock your face off! Bullet Proof Lovers is a five-track EP issued on 12" vinyl by Ghost Highway Recordings and compact disc by Artza Records. This is the Bullet Proof Lovers, so you know exactly what you're getting: high-powered rock and roll with big hooks. Juan and Luiyi continue to tear it up on guitar while Joseba and Gonzalo ably drive the rhythm. And Kurt Baker, the hardest working man in show business, belts 'em with gusto on lead vocals. This is the first new music from Bullet Proof Lovers in nearly three years, and they're not fooling around with the formula. They play no-frills rock and roll that straight-up rips. "Razor Sharp" is like Cheap Trick with a punk rock and roll edge. "I Don't Wanna Want No More" puts the power in power pop. "Fist Full of Dust" is an arena-sized shot of thunder. This EP may be "too rock" for the punk crowd and "too punk" for the rock crowd. And that's what makes it awesome. Turn it up!
