The New Brutarians - "Tiger Tales"/"The New Picasso"

Back with another superb single, The New Brutarians are channeling Side 2 of G N' R Lies by way of The Dogs D'Amour. Written in his bed at the Mondrian Hotel in Hollywood, "Tiger Tales" is Adam T's ballad of an aging glam rocker — a song that finds him reflecting back on a journey we all take. One day, you're young and pretty, and so much seems to be in front of you. Then the next day you wake up, and the decades have passed. Life has kicked you in the butt pretty well, and you have all sorts of regrets and disappointments to confront. But you've also got precious memories and some great stories to tell. I've been a fan of Adam T for a long time, but there's something about the gravitas he possesses now that has me feeling like we're just starting to see (or hear) the best of him. He has blossomed into one of rock 'n' roll's finest living lyricists. "Tiger Tales"' lyrics absolutely knock me out, and they're delivered in such a way that you can really feel them. If you're going to do ballads, they should be like this where someone can hear it and be like, "Oh hell yes, this is my life, too!" The song is loaded with touchstone references and comes off like an anthem for all those Gen X glam-punks who are still fighting the good fight. How's this for a chorus?

We were loaded like a night train
Reeling from the brain drain
Baby
Never got the invite
Never got the wind in our sails
Living in a house of pain
Loving all these lame flames
lately
But maybe tonight
I'll get that tiger by the tail
Tell some tiger tales

On "Tiger Tales," Adam T is joined by Deb Ruby on vocals along with Alan MP, Robbie Rist, Jerry Andrews, and Billy T.  It's a powerhouse of a song, and I love the way it culminates on a positive note — as Adam T remembers himself and his friends as "neon peacocks twisting in the air." Within a very particular community, this song will be goosebump-inducing.

On the virtual B-side, "The New Picasso" is a stripped-down acoustic number that alternates between being a deeply intimate love song and a reflection on Adam's identity as an artist. Perhaps he's been called the new Bukowski or the new Stiv Bators a time or two, but at this point, he's the one-and-only Adam T. I love the rawness and simplicity of this song. Its mixture of humor ("I'm not gonna throw myself under a car near Porte de la Chapelle/Or cut off my fucking ear") and sincerity is deeply satisfying. A song like this can be hard to pull off, but this track could not be more perfect.

"Tiger Tales," along with the recent New Brutarians singles "Born Out of Time," "Delinquent Things," "(Better Than The) Apocalypse," "Del Rio Way," and "Tonight's Your Night (Tonight)" has been compiled onto a 10" record that is coming out on Sioux Records. You diehard glam rockers will want to keep your eyes peeled for that! A digital version should also be available soon. As a whole, these songs represent a new distinct chapter for The New Brutarians, with much more certain to come!

The New Brutarians - "Tonight's Your Night (Tonight)"

The New Brutarians are back with another stone cold banger of a single! Last year's summer of singles was just the beginning! Adam T. and Robbie Rist are in full glam fury on this glitzy rocker that practically explodes out of your speakers. I'm talking scorching guitars, smashing drums, a whiff of whiskey and hairspray, and enough attitude in the vocals to raise Stiv Bators from the dead. If you dig Hanoi Rocks, the New York Dolls, early KISS, and Adam's old band The Beatings, then The New Brutarians are speaking your language! Vinyl release coming from Sioux Records later this year!

The Idolizers - Ka-Boom!

From New York, New York, The Idolizers play full fury, real deal punk rock 'n' roll that just straight-up rips. Out on Sioux Records, Ka-Boom! is the band's third release and first since 2022. The title pretty much says it all, doesn't it? With a style rooted in '70s punk that also incorporates garage rock and a little power pop, The Idolizers bring the energy from the get-go. This is old school New York punk just the way it ought to be — with scorching guitars, a blistering rhythm section, and attitude for days. While certainly the band's most musically varied release to date, it finds these guys rocking harder than ever. Call it '77 punk. Call it action rock. Call it garage rock. Call it whatever you want. This is rock 'n' roll music that will set your hair on fire, and it ought to be illegal to not play this record super-loud. Vinyl is limited to 300 copies. You know what to do!

Guerrilla Teens - Monkey's Paw

What can I say about Guerrilla Teens that I haven't already said before? Simply put, this is one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands out there — featuring members of some of the punk world's most illustrious acts of the past three decades. Far from a mere continuation of The Humpers or Lovesores, Guerrilla Teens have their own thing going on — and it's exciting! Featuring the talents of Scott "Deluxe" Drake on vocals, Jeff Fieldhouse on guitar, Saul Koll on guitar, Tim Connolly on drums, Anna Andersen on bass, and Dave Sobel on keyboards, Guerrilla Teens are not looking back at past glories. They're too busy crafting the next generation of classic punk rock 'n' roll songs to rest on any laurels. Their last album Under the Dagger was one of 2023's overlooked gems, but the follow-up Monkey's Paw beats it by miles. The album is out now in digital form, and a vinyl release from the ever-dependable Sioux Records is coming soon.

You know what to expect from Monkey's Paw: ten tracks of electrifying Drake/Fieldhouse–penned rock 'n' roll haymakers featuring a firestorm of guitars, an unstoppable rhythmic backbone, and typically furious vocals from the ageless force of nature that is Scott Drake. This, in fact, might be the best album Drake has put his name on since the '90s. These are Guerrilla Teens' best songs to date, and the production and playing are perfect for this kind of music. Last year's excellent single "I Cyclops" kicks off the album emphatically. If you like straight-up '70s punk, "Mary's Got the Bomb" and "Johnny on the Mainline" will get your heart racing. If you're more in the mood for some restrained menace, "Sleepwalker" and "Tonight" (which sounds like the best Dead Boys song in decades) ought to hit the spot. "My Hometown" is pure rock 'n' roll and an absolute corker. Elsewhere, "Pride of the Savanna" and the smashing title track kick up the sort of wall-shaking unholy racket that all "garage" bands should aspire to. This is going to be one of the top albums of the year, and you will certainly want to follow Guerrilla Teens and Sioux Records on the socials for updates on when the vinyl is available. If anyone has any doubts about what real rock 'n' roll is, Monkey's Paw will make it all perfectly clear.

Brad Marino - Grin & Bear It

It's no news flash that a new Brad Marino album is something I would be excited about. Marino has authored two albums that ranked #3 on my year-end lists, and today he releases another one that's gonna be way up there. Out on Sioux Records on vinyl and Rum Bar Records on CD, Grin & Bear It is another stone cold gem of three-chord pop rock 'n' roll. Within three seconds of "Back Again" kicking off, you just know you're listening Brad Marino. Once again, Marino manages to deliver killer tunes that have the style and spirit of early-to-mid '60s rock 'n' roll without coming off consciously "retro." The earworm title track dispenses essential life advice and red-hot guitar work. If aliens came to our planet and asked you what Brad Marino sounds like, you'd play them "Up and Up." The Kurt Baker–penned "Hung Up" is pure '60s pop — sounding like the second hit The Wonders could have had. "Looking Then" channels poppy Ramones and tells a relatable story about a faded beauty. "I'm Broke," a Marino/Baker co-write, is a mega-catchy rocker that brings back memories of The New Trocaderos. Marino puts so much of his own style into the Rolling Stones' unreleased track "She's Doing Her Thing" that you might mistake it for one of his originals (I know I sure did!). Marino also has at the Bobby Fuller Four classic "Another Sad and Lonely Night" and totally smashes it.

Marino enlisted a slew of talented friends to help make Grin & Bear It. Geoff Palmer, Kris Rodgers, Craig Sala, Zach Sprague, Bobby Davis, and the aforementioned Baker all play on the record. Joe King sings backing vocals on "Another Sad and Lonely Night." All that formidable musical talent is in service of 11 absolutely fantastic songs. Brad Marino as a singer, songwriter, and guitar player represents everything that's great about rock 'n' roll. For this release, he has written some smash hits and mixed in a few covers that fit the album perfectly. If rockin' pop tunes are your thing, Brad Marino is your man. The Sioux LP is on white 180-gram vinyl and limited to 300 hand-numbered copies, so you'll want to jump on that while supplies last. Compact discs are available from your home of the hits, the mighty Rum Bar Records!
